Bessie Young, MD, MPH
Bessie Young, MD, MPH, FACP, FASN, FNKF (she/her/hers) is Vice Dean for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion and Medical Director for the Office of Healthcare Equity at UW Medicine and UW School of Medicine. She is Professor of Nephrology, Department of Medicine at the University of Washington (UW), and was the Section Chief of Nephrology at the Seattle VA. She is currently engaged in community engagement to improve the health of all populations, health and social justice medical education, quality improvement, and research on justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI) issues, particularly among those with kidney disease. Young has focus much of her career on improving access to and quality of care for those diabetes, hypertension, and other chronic disease. Her research concentrates on evaluating risk factors for development and progression of kidney disease in historically minoritized and marginalized communities, genetic testing for APOL1-associated kidney disease among the U.S. African American population, education for kidney disease and kidney replacement therapies, increasing recruitment of underrecruited populations into clinical trials, and social justice in healthcare. She is a member of the UW’s Kidney Research Institute (KRI) and is founding director of the UW JEDI Center for Transformational Research.
